How does conditional priority work?

The conditional priority is controlled by an intelligent system on board the vehicle, intelligent traffic light controller (iTLCs) along the side of the road and a platform that connects vehicles to the iTLCs. When approaching an intersection, the vehicle submits a priority request via the platform. The request is validated, assigned a priority level and balanced against the total traffic volume. Our adaptive network control then calculates and controls the smartest sequence and timing of the green light.

The driver is informed via the on-board system whether he has been given priority and can proceed. The driver also receives information about the “time-to-red” and “time-to-green” and a speed recommendation to avoid stopping at red lights. If the driver follows this advice, this prevents unnecessary stopping, waiting and starting up again.

More differentiations

In principle, the timetable is leading in giving priority to public transport. That is why many road authorities work with the following characteristics: too early, on time or too late in relation to the timetable. GreenFlow allows for more differentiations, for example based on occupancy. After all, it is more valuable to give conditional priority to a full bus that may arrive late at the next stop than to an almost empty bus. Priority based on the battery consumption of an electric bus is also possible. This results in fewer stops and starts when the battery is almost empty. The differentiations are communicated to the traffic control system by the in-vehicle system via a priority level.

More comfortable driving

With GreenFlow, the driver has more information with which he can adjust his driving behavior. The driver drives more comfortably because he knows where he stands. The speed advice prevents unnecessary stopping, waiting and accelerating. This ensures a smoother traffic flow with less fuel or battery consumption and more comfort for travelers.

This is a big difference from commonly used short-range radio priority systems. The signal from these systems often only goes in one direction. There is hardly any communication back and forth. The driver doesn’t know where he stands. GreenFlow makes bidirectional communication and individual information exchange possible. Moreover, the investment costs in on-board equipment and in the communication infrastructure are a lot lower.
